If you’re looking for a place where creativity and food meet, this market is just the place for you.
Nestled in the iconic town of Hout Bay, the Bay Harbour Market is situated in an old, refurbished fish factory. As you make your way from the parking lot to the indoor market, you’ll be greeted by a very familiar ocean smell and excited, friendly faces who are happy to share their hometown with you for the day.
This weekly market is the perfect getaway from your everyday hustle-and-bustle. From paintings to trinkets, gadgets, live music, clothing, and, of course, lip-smacking treats, the Bay Harbour Market offers a trendy foodie experience unlike no other. As a first time visitor to the market, I was particularly blown away by the decor and the community feel. Everything fits seamlessly together, supporting a local, African culture where everyone sits, eats and drinks together underneath a gigantic tree trunk filled with fairy lights.
This buzzing family affair offers more than 100 local stalls. With tables set up inside and outside, visitors can fill their bellies while their children dance to the live music in a very safe environment. When you walk through the stalls, you’ll be faced with food delights from various local companies. My food choices for the day included a chicken shawarma from Tuscany Delights, some deep-fried Oreos (which were honestly to die for), blue cheese poppers from The Pickled Popper, and I sipped on a Proudly South African craft beer.
When you’re there, take a moment to soak in the finer detail. Whether it’s the energy in the room, the guests, the friendly traders or simply the combination of good food and live music, this unique attraction has certainly become a firm favourite. So, if you’re looking for a lekker experience, scratch your weekend plans and get down the Bay Harbour Market. I have yet to find something so accommodating and fun.
